Abstract

The importance of education for a country's economic and social development is a consensus in national and international literature. Because of this, knowing which factors are correlated and which may to some extents have an impact on educational performance has been a topic of discussion for researchers worldwide. In Brazil, the impact of health on education is still poorly studied, possibly due to the lack of a database with information on the subject and  the endogeneity problems that arises when there is an attempt to measure this effect. In this sense, the objective of this work was to estimate the correlation between health characteristics and the average performance in Portuguese and Mathematics of students in the 8th grade / 9th grade of public schools in Brazilian capitals and the Federal District. For this purpose, ordinary least squares models were estimated based on PeNSE 2009 and 2012 and the Brazil 2009 and 2011 Tests. The evidence from this study suggests that the practice of physical activity equal to or greater than 300 min per week has a positive correlation with performance in Portuguese and mathematics, having been assaulted by an adult in the family has a negative correlation with performance in both subjects and eating fruit five times or more a week is positively correlated with performance in mathematics.
