His success allows us to go on asking what laterals and rhotics have in common, despite their extensive surface variability. This paper argues that one of the links lies in phonotactic biases around the stressed vowel. Liquids prefer to follow open mid stressed vowels and to precede close front stressed vowels. These preferences are statistically different from those of other articulation manners and point to underlying gestural configurations typical of the liquid class.
KEYWORDS: Liquids. Phonetics.
