This article takes a Cognitive Linguistics (CL) and Construction Grammar (CG) stance on the classic debate about referential identity in non-phonological variation (Lavandera, 1978). After showing how CL and CG accomodate syntactic alternation, we go on to argue that the same treatment can be offered to the cases of non-phonological variation discussed by Lavandera (1978). One implication of this proposal is that situations of non-phonological alternation can be legitimately treated as cases of linguistic variation, as they involve referential identity.
