Abstract

ABSTRACT
The present work intends to outline a historical overview of the Portuguese-speaking presence, of European origin, on the
East Coast of the United States of America, a presence that dates back to the beginnings of the British colonization (1607
1689) in the then nascent Anglo-American territory. The aim is to characterize Portuguese emigration on the US migration
map, as well as to identify and analyze the main motivations and forms of integration of these communities, with a special
focus on the community of Hudson, Massachusetts. The scrutiny of the factors that led to the construction of a Portuguese
American identity will allow a broader framework of the Portuguese communities present today in the United States. The
analysis of the successive migratory flows from Portugal to the United States will make it possible to place Hudson in a
distinct group from the traditional recipients of Portuguese emigration in the United States of America and, specifically, in
the state of Massachusetts.
