Neste ensaio, Olabiyi Yai examina os limites dos paradigmas críticos ocidentais para a compreensão da poesia oral. Partindo da constatação de que a crítica literária foi historicamente construída a partir da escrita, o autor demonstra como categorias como “texto”, “autor” e “obra” se mostram insuficientes para abordar formas poéticas cuja existência depende do corpo, da performance, da memória, da voz e da interação com a comunidade. Yai argumenta que os processos de transcrição e tradução frequentemente reduzem a complexidade estética e cultural dessas manifestações, reforçando sua marginalização no campo dos estudos literários. Em contraposição, propõe uma renovação da crítica e do ensino da literatura a partir de epistemologias das culturas de tradição oral, reconhecendo a performance, a tradução e o contexto sociocultural (comunidade) como dimensões constitutivas da criação poética. O ensaio defende, assim, uma crítica capaz de dialogar com diferentes regimes de produção do conhecimento, ampliando as fronteiras do próprio conceito de literatura.
