Abstract

This article analyzes the pilot episode of Lovecraft Country (HBO, 2020) through the Glissantian concepts of opacity, archipelago, and creolization. It aims to demonstrate how the series subverts Lovecraftian horror by displacing the monster from the cosmos to structural racism, reconfiguring the genre from a critical and anti-colonial perspective. The methodology consists of a critical reading of the episode "Sundown", articulating scenes, characters, and narrative elements with Édouard Glissant's concepts. It argues that resistance lies not in seeking transparency, but in refusing the colonial reading of the body and history, operating through a logic of strategic opacity. The results indicate three layers of violent reading refused by Atticus's opacity, as well as the materialization of archipelago thinking in the Safe Negro Travel Guide and creolization in the protagonists' unpredictable magic. It concludes that Lovecraft Country is a Glissantian work in motion, in which the right to opacity constitutes epistemic and political resistance.
