LIFESTYLE CHANGES OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

ABSTRACT
This study aimed to evaluate changes in the lifestyle of university students
during the social isolation imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. A
cross-sectional study was conducted with 495 participants, including
professors and students aged ≥ 18 years of both sexes.
Sociodemographic, economic, health, and lifestyle data were collected
through questionnaires. Statistical analysis used descriptive statistics,
Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), chi-square test, and Wilcoxon test, with a
significance level of 5% (p < 0.05). Before the pandemic, 41.3% of
participants practiced physical activities regularly (three or more times a
week), but during social isolation, the practice of physical activities
decreased significantly (48.8% did not practice). There was a statistically
significant increase in Body Mass Index (BMI), in the daily use of
electronic devices such as computers, notebooks, and tablets, and in
the consumption of foods such as vegetables, legumes, fats, tea, coffee,
and fast food. The results highlight a substantial change in the lifestyle of
university students during the pandemic, characterized by increased
time spent using electronic devices and changes in dietary patterns. This
study highlights the importance of interventions to promote healthy
habits and mitigate the negative impacts of prolonged social isolation in
acoustic environments.
