Phonemic perception is essential for the development of oral language and literacy, as it enables the identification of minimal sound differences between words, facilitating decoding and text comprehension. This study aimed to analyze the concept of phonemic discrimination in child language, describing and evaluating instruments available for its measurement. An analytical and documentary approach was adopted, with a review of national and international literature on the application of psychometrics in assessing this skill, distinguishing identification tasks from discrimination tasks. Tests used in Brazil and other countries were described, considering stimuli, procedures, response formats, and application criteria. The analysis revealed limitations in the standardization and cultural adaptation of some instruments, as well as gaps in the assessment of specific populations. The findings indicate the need for instruments that incorporate linguistic and cognitive variables of the target population, ensuring greater validity and reliability in the assessment of phonemic discrimination in children.
