In this article, we examine idiomatic expressions formed with the verb encher (‘to fill’) from the theoretical perspective of Cognitive Linguistics. Based on data collected from the web, our aims are to: (i) identify the conceptual domains in which idioms with encher are most productive; (ii) investigate which meaning effects—positive or negative—are most frequently associated with these idioms; (iii) related to (ii), demonstrate that idioms with encher evoke the notion of reaching the limit of a container, which points to the conception of saturation or overloading in cases of negative meaning effects, and to that of fullness or satisfaction in cases of positive meaning effects; and, related to (i) and (ii), investigate whether there is a relationship between container properties, content properties, conceptual domain, and the possible positive or negative meaning effects of these idioms.
