Abstract

This study investigates four binominal quantifying constructions in Brazilian Portuguese — um mar de NP, um mundo de NP, uma legião de NP, and um leque de NP — focusing on how they express large quantities in a subjective manner. The main goal is to show that, although formally and semantically related, these constructions display their own form–meaning properties. The methodology combines quantitative collexemic/colostructural analysis with qualitative examination of usage contexts. Results indicate that each construction favors specific lexemes and contexts, revealing nonsynonymy and semantic nuances emerging from usage. The study contributes to research on constructional nonsynonymy and to discussions on whether quantitative methods can inform meaning.

Karen Sampaio Braga Alonso é mestre e doutora em Linguística pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em Linguística (UFRJ). É Professora Associada III do Departamento de Linguística e Filologia da Faculdade de Letras da UFRJ. É docente e coordenadora do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Linguística e docente do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras Neolatinas e do Mestrado Profissional em Letras (PROFLETRAS), todos da UFRJ. Bolsista de Produtividade do CNPq e recebe Auxílio à Pesquisa - APQ1, da FAPERJ. Atua na área da Gramática de Construções Baseada no Uso e é coautora do livro “Conhecimento em rede: laços e entrelaços da língua em uso”.
