Discursivization from Colonization to the Restoration of Independence in Timor-Leste: effects of meaning of the Portuguese Language

This article examines the effects of meaning of the Portuguese Language (PL) in Timor-Leste within the discursive process spanning from colonization to the 2002 Restoration of Independence. Based on Pêcheutian Discourse Analysis, the study explores the displacement of PL from a colonial Discursive Formation (DF) toward a DF of national liberation. By deploying categories such as ideological interpellation, discursive memory, discursive event, and subject-position, we argue that language serves as the materiality through which the Maubere subject resists identity erasure. Findings suggest that the survival of PL results from a disidentification with the Indonesian occupation and a subjective appropriation of the colonial archive, transmuting a tool of subjection into a symbolic stronghold of sovereignty.
