Drinking water is defined as that which meets drinking standards, requiring coagulation / flocculation treatments. Aluminum sulfate, the most used coagulant in Brazil, has negative effects on human health, justifying the need for the study of polymers. In the study, tests were carried out using xanthan gum as a flocculant associated with the chemical coagulant PAC in order to observe the effect of variations in the concentrations of both in the removal of color and water turbidity. In the tests it was observed that the color and the turbidity were reduced when the concentrations of PAC and xanthan gum go, individually, from the smallest volume tested to the largest. However, when analyzed together, there was a decrease in color and an increase in turbidity. It can be concluded that the combined use of PAC and xanthan gum at concentrations of 10 and 0.9 ppm, respectively, is more advantageous. With this analysis, equations were obtained that allow the calculation of color and turbidity from PAC and xanthan gum concentration values, thus determining the best application conditions.
