This work presents an electronic circuit that generates electromagnetic pulses in a frequency range from tens of Hertz up to approximately 1MHz. The operation principle of this circuit is based on the avalanche effect of electric current that, in the circuit under study, occurs at the collector-base junction of an NPN transistor at the moment the voltage applied to the collector exceeds the avalanche voltage (VCBO). The generator consists of two stages: a trigger circuit that is responsible for making the transistor start its conduction and the oscillator that is responsible for generating pulses and electrical noise that are converted into pulses and electromagnetic noise. Although this type of technology is capable of damaging electronic devices when the generated signals have high power, it can be applied in situations when the signal power is not within the destructive range in order to intentionally block radio frequency signals, signal distortion analysis in oscilloscope probes, base noise generation for EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) studies in electronic circuits among other applications.
