Scientific research is a rigorous and systematic act, whose purpose is to find solutions to problems. The present study aimed to identify the understanding that a group of master's students has about research, the characteristics of the research they intend to develop and the trends and approaches of research in Science Teaching and/or Mathematics Education. This is a descriptive and exploratory research with a qualitative approach, which took place during the first academic semester of 2021. The research involved 9 master's students participating in the compulsory discipline of Research Line 3: Trends and research approaches in Science and Mathematics, of the Academic Master's Course in Teaching, offered by the IFMT/UNIC association. An electronic questionnaire (Google forms) was used to collect data, which allowed us to verify the Master's students' subjective understanding of research, as well as the following characteristics of the intended research: theme, theorists, field, and method. In addition, it was possible to verify the trends and approaches of research in Science and/or Mathematics Teaching according to this group of master's students. Thus, the study allowed us to understand what scientific research is, the most recurrent trends and approaches in research in the area, and to define the main characteristics of their research in development.
