Niobium oxide has been shown to be a highly promising material in several areas with technological
applications. In this work, niobium oxide was prepared and characterized from the thermal
decomposition of the niobium acid (Nb2O5nH2O) at different calcination temperatures. It was observed
that the temperature has a significant effect on the modification of all physicochemical properties of the
prepared materials. The increase of the calcination temperature does not affect niobium oxide
crystallinity up to 450 ° C, after which temperature the material appears as a crystalline oxide. As
regards to the specific areas and the materials total acidity it was observed that increasing calcination
temperature led to changes (decrease) of these properties, due to the processes of superficial
dehydration and the reduction of specific area caused by increasing of average particle size and
possibly the decrease of the materials porosity. It was also observed that niobic acid is a reductive
material in the presence of hydrogen at high temperatures. Thus, the study and elucidation of these
physico-chemical properties, with respect to niobium oxide, may be important in order to direct the
choice of this material for a given technological application.
