Abstract

The metabolism of plants during the digestive process of insects can alter the chemical constituents and biological potential of the metabolized tissues. Thus, the present work aimed to evaluate possible changes in the chemical profile and activity of the Solanum paniculatum metabolized leaves by grasshopper Xileus discoideus. The metabolized leaves showed greater toxicity (LC50 18.9 µg/mL), higher phenolic content (78.03 mgGAE /g) and antioxidant activity (EC50 7.88) 48.80 when compared to non-metabolized leaves with values of 55.70 mgGAE/g, EC50 48.80 and LC50 45.7 µg/mL, respectively. It was observed also activation of the antimicrobial action, whereas the non-metabolized leaves did not show any activity until the concentration of 1000 μg/mL. The chemical profiles of the metabolized and non-metabolized leaves showed differences when compared by the HPLC analysis.
