Abstract

Instrumental techniques of different natures have been used to determine the average concentrations of inorganic chemical species in natural waters, thus enabling the assessment of the environmental quality of water systems. Dispersive energy X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) represents a promising alternative in the quantification of these elements as it presents simplicity in sample preparation and low operating cost when compared to other analytical techniques. In this study, we evaluated the ability to reliably quantify the elements Fe, Al, Mg, Ca, Na, K, Li and Sr in natural waters by EDXRF. We also used the technique to assess the water quality of the Rio Lajeado Pardo hydrographic basin, located in the northwest of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. The results point to good agreements in the analysis of the elements Fe, Al and K. In addition, the EDXRF technique was able to differentiate the average concentrations of different geographical areas, following the variation of the average concentrations of the local chemical species in the water samples. , which are inherent to the use and occupation other than soils. The principal component statistical analysis (PCA) was used for the parameters of the water quality monitoring, showing a moderate relationship between the variables that allows the distinction of behavior between the sampling points.
