Sustainable development: in search of a concept

Abstract

The article conducts a bibliographic and documentary analysis of the concept of sustainability, highlighting its complexity and controversial use in postmodern society. It explores the influences of scientific and technological discoveries on productive sectors, consumers, and public policies, and discusses the difficulty of establishing a clear and universally accepted definition. It questions which dimensions should be considered in sustainable development and how to measure urban sustainability. The text emphasizes the need to balance economic growth, social equality, and environmental preservation, warning that the relentless pursuit of economic growth can compromise sustainability. It addresses the evolution of the concept from the Brundtland Report (1987) to international conferences like Eco-92, highlighting differences in approach between Northern and Southern countries. It explores the connection between quality of life, human rights, and sustainable development, and emphasizes the importance of respecting the right to a healthy environment. Finally, it underscores the need for a critical and holistic approach to understand the true meaning of sustainability and its application in various fields of knowledge
