Abstract

This review is dedicated to the fourth edition of Rhétorique et argumentation (Armand Colin, 2025) by Jean-Jacques Robrieux, a manual that approaches the discipline from the perspective of the New Rhetoric of C. Perelman and L. Olbrechts-Tyteca. The work designates rhetoric as the art of persuasion in the realm of the verisimilar, presenting the history of the discipline, figures of speech as inherent components of enunciation, and argument typologies (quasi-logical, empirical, and coercive). The reviewer highlights the book's systematic clarity but points out its main limitation: a focus on the cataloging of techniques. Robrieux's approach is also contrasted with Meyer's (2009) problematology, which centers on the negotiation of distance between interlocutors. It is concluded that the delimitation of the work's scope is a deliberate theoretical choice. The work is primarily aimed at students and researchers in Letters, Social Communication, Philosophy, and related fields.
