Abstract

This article presents research results on the adverbial construction of substitution with the connectors em vez de (instead of), e ao invés de (instead of), in occurrences in Brazilian, Mozambican, and Angolan Portuguese. Based on the events described in the main clause and the adverbial clause, it is observed that the adverbial clause points to the event that will not occur, and the main clause to the event that will replace it. The analysis is based on a functional-discursive approach, with research grounded in news articles from 21st-century newspapers and magazines, using both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Of the 543 occurrences analyzed, it was found that the form em vez de (instead of),  is more recurrent than ao invés de, (instead of),  corresponding to 73.66% of the total. Although they present some similarity, the results reveal distinctive and striking features regarding the position of the clauses and the semantic-discursive value attributed to each one, even though both stem from the notion of substitution.
