A value function is a map like a valuation that can be defined on rings with zero divisors. In this paper, we deal with a new type of value function for finite-dimensional semisimple algebras over valued fields called gauge. While a valuation on a field does not always extend to a valuation on a quaternion division algebra, we show how to construct explicitly a gauge in an arbitrary quaternion algebra. We also prove that the associated graded algebra of the gauge constructed here is a graded quaternion algebra.
