Abstract

The current studyaims to demonstrate the relevance of linguistic variation teaching in English classroomsetting as foreign language (FL). To do so, it sought to investigate if Brazilian learners, who belong to a language school, were aware of the existence of forms in phonological reduction processes in English. The results have revealed that the informants have presented a reasonable level of language awareness on theforms displayed in the linguistic awareness test. Furthermore, it has found out that factors such as proficiency level and living in an English country were not significant. Taking into consideration that the language school adopts the English standard variety in classroom and the information obtained from the sociolinguistic questionnaire, it is assumedthat suchawareness may be awakened throughtheuseof songs, movies, TV series, apps, among others, by learners as tools for improvingtheir linguistic knowledge inEnglish. In the light of this, there is a necessity for teaching language variation in classroom settingbecause variation is an inherent phenomenon to the grammar, therefore its learning provides an efficient communicative interaction among its users.
