Abstract

In this work, the electronic and structural properties of several flavonoids have been calculated by using  the semi-empirical RM1 method. Some electronic properties such as (i) energies and morphology of  HOMO/LUMO orbitals, (ii) dipole momentum and (iii) global descriptors of chemical reactivity such as  ionization potential, electron affinity, electronegativity, chemical potential, hardness and electronic  softness, and electrophilicity for molecules were calculated. The results showed that the presence or  absence of hydroxyl groups in characteristic positions of flavonoid compounds significantly affect the  electronic properties of the molecules. The results showed that quercetin and chrysin had the smallest and  the largest energy gap, respectively, indicating that the presence of hydroxyl groups significantly  increases molecular electronic density, promoting changes in global reactivity descriptors, meaning that  the greater the presence of hydroxyl groups in the flavonoid structure promotes the formation of a  molecule with lower electronic hardness, thus indicating a possible ability to react with a nucleophile in  different reactions. In this context, the chosen quantum method proved to be quite appropriate for the  theoretical description of electronic properties for the flavonoids studied in this work, making it possible  to identify which structural differences lead to changes in the electronic properties of these compounds.
