This paper aims at exploring the way in which the gesture of retification by Michel Pêcheux is justified and authorized by the lacanian assertion that “there’s only cause for what fails”, stressing its ethical dimension in the sense that this gesture comes to include the subject within the theses announced. In order to do that, the paper analyses the forced inclusion of Witze (jokes) in the process of writing Les vérités de La Palice as a symptom inscribed within the body of the text, a sign of what was failing in the theorization. It stresses the freudian hypothesis of unconscious as the basis for the materialistic thesis and retakes the concept of unconcious advanced by Jacques Lacan, introducing the law of the signifier in the domain of the cause.
