A importância do cirurgião-dentista na detecção do ateroma e prevenção do acidente vascular cerebral: revisão de literatura

O objetivo deste estudo foi ressaltar a importância do Cirurgião-Dentista na detecção de ateromas calcificados, através das radiografias panorâmicas solicitadas na rotina clínica. Esses achados radiográficos são relevantes no diagnóstico precoce de calcificações das artérias carótidas que podem ser indicadores de um futuro distúrbio cardiovascular. Para tanto, foi feito uma revisão de literatura com artigos na língua inglesa, na base de dados PubMed, publicados entre os anos de 2015 à 2022. Foi utilizado as palavras-chave (keywords) na língua inglesa: “atherosclerotic plaque”, “panoramic radiography”, “dental surgeon” e “diagnosis” como ferramenta de busca. O cirurgião-Dentista, ao detectar radiograficamente a calcificação das artérias carótidas, pode identificar o paciente com risco de doença coronariana e encaminha-lo para intervenções adicionais com intuito de evitar eventos adversos que podem ser fatais ou incapacitantes, como os acidentes vasculares cerebrais.
