Abstract

This theoretical-reflective essay problematizes the loneliness and psychological suffering experienced by graduate students, analyzing them not as individual failures of adaptation but as structural phenomena inherent to the contemporary organization of scientific work. Drawing from the Brazilian experience and in dialogue with the international literature, the text discusses how neoliberal logic and academic productivism transform the university into an illness-inducing environment. The study highlights the supervisory relationship as the epicenter, showing how power asymmetry and structural dependence create favorable conditions for abuse, moral harassment, and pedagogical neglect. It also analyzes institutional silence as a self-protection mechanism of universities, which transfers the responsibility for illness to the individual and fosters the medicalization of suffering. Finally, the essay proposes guidelines for building an ethically formative academic culture, including the depersonalization of supervision, the creation of independent reporting channels, and the adoption of systemic well-being policies that recognize structural inequalities of gender, race, and class. It concludes that scientific excellence cannot have exploitation and suffering as its price.
