Abstract

The article is based on the objective of analyzing beliefs and conceptions through the practices of homework in the teaching and learning processes of the Elementary School. The investigation was carried out considering the qualitative and phenomenological approach, which pays attention to the subjectivity of the research participants. To produce data, classes were observed regarding homework in two 4th grade, interviews with the two teachers and a focus group with six students — one teacher and three students from each class. The theoretical framework on beliefs and conceptions guided the analysis. The results demonstrate the use of homework as a naturalized culture. Participants, in accordance with their experiences in contact with the resource, value this type of activity believing that it performs different functions that promote learning. However, it is used without clear guidelines, with insufficient space in the class routine and without monitoring results. We infer that the home activity is a resource used to promote the learning process; however, it needs to be better understood to meet the purposes assigned to them.
