Author Guidelines

Originality and Authorship Policy

Seeking to balance academic rigor, diversity of voices, and the promotion of consolidated research networks, we aim to follow the definitions and guidelines below regarding collective authorship and multiple article publications, always subject to the approval of the Executive Committee.

fólio publishes only original and unpublished works that are not under review by other journals.

The main author is mentioned in the first position and does not necessarily represent the corresponding author. The latter is the one with whom the journal maintains communication throughout the editorial process. Co-authors are identified by subsequent mention.

All authors are responsible for the research, preparation, and revision of the submitted work. In all cases, the decision on the distribution of authorship roles rests exclusively with the proponents.

We consider regular the number of up to three co-authors in a single article (total of four authors). Above this number, we request that a justification, based on the nature of the research, be added to the submission form. If approved, an explanatory note will be included in the final text, indicating the format of work that led to the multiplicity of authors. Our concern is to ensure the ethical application of authorship relations, in accordance with international editorial best practices.

Two or more articles with an identical set of authors will not be published in the same issue. However, the same researcher may play different authorship roles in the same publication, with up to three articles with partially shared authorship being admitted (e.g., the same lead author in one article and co-author in two others; or the same co-author in up to three articles with different configurations).

We do not restrict publication in consecutive issues. On the contrary, the journal encourages the publication of articles by the same author or group in successive issues, as a way to consolidate editorial identities, foster reader interest, historically record the development of research lines, and follow series of works originating from the same research centers.

fólio seeks to recognize the specificities of production in Language and Literature and related fields – the nature of the authorial role, ongoing collaborations, research supervision relationships, working group configurations, and the consolidation of research lines over time.

These guidelines seek to align with the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), and the criteria for substantive contribution adopted by reference journals in the area.

Text Length

  • Articles: minimum 12, maximum 30 pages.

  • Reviews: minimum 4, maximum 10 pages.

  • Other textual genres: follow the criteria defined for the respective section or will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the Executive Editorial Board.

Standardization and Formatting

Submissions are requested to follow the ABNT guidelines (NBR 10520/2023) for citations and references. A reference copy is available here. For formatting, we ask that the following parameters be observed at the time of submission:

General settings

  • Font: Century Gothic, size 12.

  • Spacing: 1.5 between lines (no additional spacing before or after paragraphs).

  • Margins: 2 cm on all sides (A4 paper).

  • File: Word format (.doc or .docx).

  • Do not use ALL CAPS, page numbering, or the tab key for indentation.

Textual elements

  • Title: size 14, spacing 1.0, lowercase, centered.

  • Paragraphs: 1 cm indentation on the first line (use the editor's ruler, not the tab key).

  • Short direct quotations: within the text, in quotation marks.

  • Long direct quotations (more than three lines): spacing 1.0, font size 11, no quotation marks, left indentation of 4 cm.

  • Footnotes: font size 10, spacing 1.0, left-justified, automatic numbering.

Abstracts and keywords

  • Abstract (in the original language): 100 to 250 words, font size 11, spacing 1.0, justified, immediately after the author identification.

  • Keywords: five words or phrases, with only the first letter capitalized, separated by commas.

  • Abstract and keywords in a foreign language (English or Spanish): follow the same rules as the abstract in the original language (applicable to articles, not reviews).

During the editing and typesetting phase, our editorial team will handle any necessary adjustments to ensure consistency.

Review Process

Submitted works undergo an initial screening by the Executive Editorial Board, which verifies:

  • academic consistency and relevance to the journal's scope;

  • originality and declaration of use of artificial intelligence tools (when applicable).

Once these criteria are met, the Board appoints a responsible editor, who selects two reviewers with thematic or methodological affinity to conduct blind peer review. This process applies to articles in the continuous flow sections (Interfaces, Confluences, and Headwaters) and thematic calls (DOSSIER).
