We investigate the contextual gradient and fixation of constructional patterns of the prepositional adverb constructional scheme (in front of, before, in front of/a, in front of) in Brazilian Portuguese, and we analyze the motivating contexts from the definitions of Diewald (2002) and Diewald e Smirnova (2012). For this purpose, we used a qualitative methodology and data from two newspapers (Folha de São Paulo; Estadão), in the 2017 period, in which we analyzed the meaning of lexemes, and the various types of context(s) in which linguistic expressions (constructions) are used. From the analysis, we saw that different usage patterns can be seen as a process of analogization and that the different meanings emerge from the recognition of the hybrid categorization of this category, in a categorical continuum, in which the existing gradient between prepositional and adverbials.
