Abstract

This article aims at discussing the use of the discourse marker (DM) “yeah” in English and its Brazilian Portuguese fansubs, spoken by character Dylan in the TV series Bates Motel. It is verified how the character uses this DM to construct his epistemic and interpersonal stances while interacting with his mother, Norma. WordSmith Tools ® programs were utilized to align the audio script and subtitle files, count the discourse markers used by Dylan, and observe the context of use of “yeah” and its fansubs. It is observed that Dylan, both in English and Portuguese, adopts different stances, showing himself to be correct, irreducible, ironic.
