L2 development and L1 attrition in an L1-dominant environment: analysing voice onset time in L1 Spanish and L2 English

Abstract

In this study, we investigate the occurrence of L1 attrition among Argentinean learners of English (L2) living in their home country, which constitutes an L1-dominant environment. We analyzed the production of Voice Onset Time in word-initial plosives in L1 Spanish by monolingual and bilingual participants. We carried out both an inferential analysis and an individual verification of each participant’s production, which proved to be complementary. Our results suggest that not only is the L2 affected by the L1, but also the L1 can be modified in view of the contact with additional languages.

Ubiratã Kickhöfel Alves, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS / Brazil)

Ubiratã Kickhöfel Alves holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul and a master's degree in Applied Linguistics from the Catholic University of Pelotas. He has a Doctorate-Sandwich degree from the University of Massachusetts - Amherst, USA (2007). He completed postdoctoral studies at the National University of Mar del Plata (Argentina - 2014). He is Professor of the Graduate Program in Letters of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). He is a Productivity Scholar (level 2) of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq-Brasil). He is Adjunct Coordinator of the Laboratory of Bilingualism and Cognition (LABICO-UFRGS). Advisor of Master Dissertations and PhD Theses in the area of Phonological-Phonological Development of Foreign Language.

Pedro Luis Luchini, National University of Mar del Plata (UNMdP / Argentina)

Pedro Luis Luchini holds a PhD in Literature from the National University of Mar del Plata - UNMdP, Argentina, and a Master's degree in English Language Teaching (King's College, University of London, UK). He is Professor of the National University of Mar del Plata (UNMdP-Argentina). Coordinator of the Research Group "Language Issues" (UNMdP). He develops studies in the areas of Applied Phonology and Phonology, English as a Free Language and Acquisition of Foreign Languages.

Laura Castilhos Schereschewsky, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS / Brazil)

Laura Castilhos Schereschewsky holds a Master's Degree in Psychology from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). She was a Scientific Initiation Scholar between 2015 and 2017 in the area of Phonological-Phonological Acquisition of Foreign Language and a Bachelor of Arts degree, with emphasis in Portuguese and English, in 2018, also by UFRGS.
