Abstract

In this literature review, we discuss the contributions that language acquisition studies present beyond their primary objectives related to the description of the process of language incorporation by children. We present two major contributions, one for linguistic theory and the other for clinical and pedagogical interventions. As for the first, we discuss the contribution of L1 acquisition studies in the description of the categorization of sounds in languages, in the validation of principles of universal grammar, in the verification of the syntactic hierarchy of functional categories in mental representation, in the formulation of hypotheses about linguistic impairment and in understanding the process of linguistic change. As for the second, we discuss how acquisition studies can collaborate in differentiating typical and atypical acquisition, as well as differentiating types of linguistic pathologies, such as language-delayed children and phonological disorders, in addition to discussing collaboration in understanding the difficulties of individuals in the process of literacy.

Jean Carlos da Silva Gomes é doutor e Mestre em Linguística pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em Linguística da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Atualmente, atua como professor temporário de Língua e Literatura em Espanhol na Universidade do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte. Seus interesses de pesquisa versam sobre aquisição e perda de linguagem com foco nas categorias de tempo e aspecto com base na teoria gerativa e aquisição/ensino de espanhol como língua estrangeira. Bolsista do Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq).
