Resistance and Challenge: Traits of Pêcheux’s Thought in Brazil

Abstract

The studies based on M. Pêcheux’s ideas have acquired a specific identity in Brazil. This “Brazilian School of Discourse Analysis” is built around two distinguishing traits of Pêcheux’s thought: resistance and challenge. These two traits are delineated in the text Sur la (dé-)construction des théories linguistiques, published in 1982. The resistance is in the unrelenting criticism to the studies that treat linguistic issues in the domain ofBiology, Logic, and Individual or Social Psychology. The challenge is in the formulation of the foundations of a field of studies that addresses ambiguity and contradiction as constituents of the linguistic.

Luiz Francisco Dias é doutor em Lingüística pela Unicamp. Professor da graduação e do Programa de Pós-graduação em Estudos Lingüísticos da Fale/UFMG. Pesquisador do Grupo de Estudos Funcionalistas da Linguagem e do Grupo Lingüística de Gêneros e Tipos Textuais – CNPq/UFMG. Autor de vários artigos publicados em revistas indexadas. Autor de vários capítulos de livro, entre os quais A sintaxe em novas dimensões; Fundamentos do sujeito gramatical: uma perspectiva da enunciação; A aula de gramática e a realidade discursiva do vocábulo; O estudo de classes de palavras: problemas e alternativas de abordagem; O nome da língua no Brasil: uma questão polêmica; Gramática, discurso e significação: relações de dependência semântica na gramática tradicional; Gramática e ensino do português: abrindo horizontes. Autor do livro Os Sentidos do Idioma Nacional: as bases enunciativas do nacionalismo lingüístico no Brasil. Organizador do livro Texto, Escrita, Interpretação: ensino e pesquisa.
