Itãs bordados na pele: a representação de Iemanjá na construção do corpo-território de Rachel Reis

In the context of the cultural industry, myths and mythological narratives play a
crucial role in shaping the visual identity of many artists. In the career of Rachel
Reis, a singer and songwriter from Feira de Santana, Bahia, the integration of
symbols and icons related to the itãs of the orixá Iemanjá is evident in her artistic identity. In the photo essay produced specifically for Glamour magazine in February 2024, the artist reveals visual elements that help to understand her identity and connection with the Yoruba sea goddess. By exploring the concept of arkhé, as defined by Muniz Sodré (2005) as the primordial basis that drives the culture and rituals of the orixás, this work seeks to investigate how the artist uses these elements, especially highlighted in the photos from Glamour magazine, to construct her visual identity. This analysis will be based on a semiotic approach, following the principles established by Martine Joly.
