Internet of things: experiences in schools in Bahia

Abstract

New arterfacts, forms of communication, and behaviors are introduced into society as a result of technological transformations. Currently, these changes are present in various objects that interact with each other intelligently and sensorially through the Internet of Things (IoT). This study analyzes the possibilities and impacts of IoT in the educational scenario, based on practical experiences developed in two municipal public elementary schools located in the state of Bahia, specifically in the cities of Vitória da Conquista and Mata de São João. The research is qualitative in nature, descriptive and analytical, based on semi-structured interviews with teachers and managers who participated in the projects. For data analysis, we used the content analysis method. The results of this study conclude that the integration of IoT is a field of attention in education, as it is being used as a tool for managing and monitoring school attendance, with little connection to pedagogical practices, limited participation of teachers and the school community in its implementation process, and monitoring of the projects. Therefore, this research contributes to questioning the purely technical view of the integration of technologies in the school environment, due to the lack of debate about the use of these innovations and the guarantee of rights. These actions are important to ensure that technologies are not used solely as a surveillance tool and that the data generated in educational institutions are used for educational purposes.
