Measure, Extract, Archive: The Mechanization of Desire in Rubem Fonseca’s Short Story “The Championship”

Abstract

This article analyzes the mechanization of desire in Rubem Fonseca's short story "The Championship", published in Feliz Ano Novo (1975). Departing from readings that privilege obscenity or violence as interpretive keys, it argues that the narrative stages the inscription of sexuality within a technical regime of measurement — a dispositif in which erotic experience acquires intelligibility only when previously quantified. Within this logic, pleasure ceases to constitute experience and becomes measurable performance, while the body is reconfigured as a normative support. Such machinery operates through the systematic translation of qualities into quantities, establishing an economy in which the full visibility of the body coincides with its exhaustion as a field of indeterminacy. Drawing on a theoretical framework anchored in the critique of technical reason and biopolitics, the article contends that the narrative configures a form of life in which subjectivity is progressively permeated by operations of calculation and storage. It concludes that sexuality, subjected to procedures of verification and validation, loses its relational dimension, reducing itself to a sequence of measurable occurrences — an immanent effect of a rationality that renders irrelevant whatever cannot be inscribed in the archive.
