Invisible Autism: A Study on the Correlation between Racism and Autism Diagnosis in the Greater Vitória Region-ES

Abstract

The historical process of the enslavement of African people in Brazil perpetuates social, economic, and cultural inequalities, affecting the mental health of the Black population. Brazilian psychology, initially influenced by colonialism and Eurocentrism, has reinforced these disparities. The main objective of this study is to identify the current scientific landscape regarding racism experienced by diagnosed autistic Black individuals in the Greater Vitória region, highlighting inequalities in access to mental health public policies for the Black population. This research is characterized as documentary and qualitative, drawing on official documents from public agencies (city halls, city councils) to identify programs, actions, and projects aimed at providing care for Black patients with suspected or confirmed Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The results highlight laws and data related to access to diagnosis and treatment for the autistic Black population in the Greater Vitória region of Espírito Santo. Finally, the study demonstrates how structural racism affects Black people with ASD in Brazil, limiting their access to health services and early diagnosis. The Berenice Piana Law alone is insufficient to ensure equal access. Effective public policies and awareness-raising are necessary to overcome these inequalities. The anti-racist struggle is essential to guarantee equal rights and inclusion for Black autistic individuals.
