Abstract

This work presents a reflection on old age and death based on studies that discuss the concept of the tragic. Using the philosophy of the tragic, it points to the differences between the genre of tragedy and the philosophical concept, in addition to defending that the limits of the tragic go beyond the space of tragedy, thus proposing the tracking of the persistence of the tragic in contemporaneity. It also carries out an analysis of the theme of old age and death in the novel a máquina de fazer espanhóis, by the Portuguese author Valter Hugo Mãe, in order to trace, in the narration of the story’s protagonist, the tragic understanding of the finitude of life and the reverberations of this feeling in old age
