A CARNAVALIZAÇÃO DA HISTÓRIA EM GALVEZ, IMPERADOR DO ACRE

Abstract

The historical reflection allowed by literature makes us look at marginalized facts of the historiographic record. The literary work Galvez, Emperor of Acre, by Márcio Souza, performs exactly this movement, it represents the annexation of the state of Acre into Brazilian territory. Due to the satirical language of the work, we aim, with this research, to observe how Galvez's historical figure is represented from the perspective of Mikhail Bakhtin's literary carnivalization. We assess how Galvez's figure is placed in relation to others in the work, through the two-way process of carnivalization. Since carnival is a party for breaking hierarchies, we can see how the protagonist narrator makes use of language to sometimes demean powerful figures, sometimes to elevate lesser figures. Thus, we realize that the exaggerations both in language, and in the construction of character figurations, others, those of Galvez, work as a signal for this historical moment and for the persona of Luis Gálvez Rodríguez de Arias, whose historiographic records deserve greater recognition and, as the popular carnival, should not go unnoticed.
