Decolonial comparative Literature as imaginative method of critical approach: a theoretical review of the method

Abstract

This article approaches comparative literature from a decolonial perspective, emphasizing the importance of giving voice to marginalized groups and challenging the hegemonic narratives that often dominate the literary field. Literature is presented as a powerful means of reflecting on and critiquing social injustices, and the proposal of a decolonial comparative literature aims to include diverse voices and experiences, especially those that have been historically silenced. The text also mentions the need for self-criticism in the act of comparison, recognizing that dominant ideologies and discourses can perpetuate inequalities. Furthermore, the idea of ​​"similarities-in-difference" is central to this approach, as it allows for a richer and more complex analysis of the interactions between different cultures and literatures, without falling into the trap of hierarchization. The role of the subaltern is emphasized as essential for decolonizing dominant visions and making visible the suffering of marginalized peoples. The aim of this article is therefore to provide the main discussions on what is meant by decolonial comparative literature. To fuel this discussion, we draw on the texts of Alós (2012), Mignolo (2003), Nolasco (2024) and Stancheva (2022), among others. We conclude that the comparatist not only has the responsibility to discuss decoloniality, but also to put it into debate in their comparative practices.
