This article analyzes the disputes surrounding Black memory in the urban space of Salvador, Bahia, using the case of Mãe Stella de Oxóssi, ialorixá of Ilê Axé Opô Afonjá and a central figure in Candomblé in Brazil, with a long history of defending religions of African origin. The research examines the symbolic and material attacks directed at the sculpture erected in her honor, understanding them as expressions of religious racism and the tensions that permeate the Black presence in the city. Methodologically, the study is based on documentary analysis, urban ethnography, and bibliographic review, engaging with the anthropology of the city, memory studies, and ethnic-racial relations. It argues that the controversy surrounding Mãe Stella's image reveals broader disputes about which narratives, bodies, and knowledge are legitimized in public spaces, highlighting the limits of patrimonialization and institutional recognition of religions of African origin. The article contributes to the debate on Black memory, religious racism, and urban policies in the Brazilian context.
