Repetition in orality as a metonimic process: a cognitive-functional study

Abstract

In this research, we investigated a resource that is often used in the orality: the repetition, which is comprehended as a mechanism that helps in the interaction, generating new meanings. For this purpose, we based our research, especially, on the functionalist studies, on the postulates of Cognitive Linguistics and on the studies of Text Linguistics. In this work, we aimed at identifying how speakers, who have high schooling level and are from Vitória da Conquista (through the Corpus PCVC), use the repetition in the construction of the spoken text. We catalogued six micro-structuring functions: Reconstituidora I, Reconstituidora II, Distribuidora, Desdobramento, Paralelização and Intensificadora. In the qualitative study, we attested that the repetition is an important resource for keeping and conducting the discursive topic. We also attested that the repetition is constituted as a metonymic process. In conclusion, the repetition is a process that makes possible the organization of the human experience, reaching the textual scope by means of speech acts and producing, cognitively, linguistic structures in layers.

PhD Student in Language and Culture from the Postgraduate Program in Language and Culture of the Federal University of Bahia - UFBA. Master in Linguistics, Graduate Program in Linguistics, State University of Southwest Bahia (UESB). Develops research in the areas of Cognitive Linguistics and Functionalism. Graduated in Languages (Portuguese and English) from the State University of Southwest Bahia. He was a research fellow in Sociofunctionalism and Historical Linguistics-CNPq / FAPESB.

Valéria Viana Sousa é doutora em Letras (área de concentração em Linguística e Língua Portuguesa) pela Universidade Federal da Paraíba (UFPB), Professora Titular da Área de Linguística da Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia, onde atua no curso de graduação de Letras, no Programa de Pós-graduação de  Linguística (PPGLin) e no ProfLetras. É  coordenadora do Grupo de Pesquisa em Linguística Histórica e do Grupo de Pesquisa em Sociofuncionalismo – CNPq.
