This article aims to identify the reading movements, based on the reflection on the different meanings of the term “phrase” developed in the texts of Émile Benveniste — Levels of linguistic analysis, published in 1962, and the text The form and the sense in language, from the year 1966. The research problem posed is how to bring contributions present in Benveniste's two texts, so that one can think of different movements in the teaching of school reading, as an activity created in enunciation? The theoretical foundation will be developed from the assumptions of Benveniste (2005, 2006); in the contributions of Flores (2013), and also in the studies of Petit (2009), regarding reading and school. The study involves exploratory and bibliographic research with a qualitative approach. We are guided by language teaching focused on real communication situations, which requires knowledge that goes beyond the merely metalinguistic knowledge of nomenclatures, divisions, and grammatical classifications. The language teaching we advocate requires mastery of language exercises, which are always unique and unrepeatable.
