POLITICAL CULTURE AND INSTITUTIONS IN REGENCY BRAZIL: THE FIRST LEGISLATURE OF THE PROVINCIAL ASSEMBLY OF PERNAMBUCO (1835-1836)

In its early years, the regency government of Brazil empire took series of political and administrative measures of a decentralizing character, seeking to soften the centralization that characterized the previous period of that First Kingdom. One of the symbols of these changes was the institution of the Provincial Assemblies created by the constitutional reform of the Additional Act of 1834. The objective was to grant greater autonomy to the provinces within the scope of their administration. This work has as main purpose to analyze the implantation in the province of Pernambuco of its Assembly, from the choice of the first deputies to the functioning of its first legislature. With the tools of political history and political culture studies, we seek to understand the way in which this new institution was incorporated into local policies, the connections of its deputies with the different factions that fought for the power in the province and their role in the changes that happened in the Regency.
