Impact of coal mining on local climate pattern changes and the life of the local community in Moatize, Mozambique

Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of coal mining on climate pattern changes and the life of the local community in Moatize, Mozambique. The methodology used included the analysis of climate data from two different periods and the application of a survey to the local population. The results showed a reduction in the trend of increasing dry days and a decreasing trend of consecutive humid days, while total annual precipitation and maximum and minimum temperatures showed increasing trends. The local community perceived these changes and mainly attributed them to coal mining. Furthermore, the effects of these changes include reduced agricultural production, problems accessing potable water, and increased cases of climate-related diseases. In conclusion, it is necessary to adopt measures to mitigate the effects of mining on climate change and the quality of life of the local community, such as the adoption of cleaner technologies in mining and the development of support programs for affected farmers.
