Mathematics education from the discipline fundamentals and trends of research in mathematics education

Abstract

This text was produced with the aim of demonstrating the first author's understanding of the concept of Mathematics Education (ME) built throughout the subject Fundamentals and Trends in Research in Mathematics Education. For this purpose, texts by authors such as Carvalho (1991), Carneiro (2000), Fiorentini and Lorenzato (2006), D´Ambrósio (2006), Resende; Moran (2022). This is a production of a qualitative nature in which the bibliographic review was used as a method. The text was guided from the following questions: what is Mathematics Education? What is its historical process and what are its contributions to research, teaching and learning mathematics? It is concluded that Mathematics Education can be understood as an area of research and teaching and knowledge of the social sciences that focuses on the process of teaching and learning mathematics. It is also concluded that in its historical process, it was influenced by renowned researchers, mathematicians and psychologists such as John Dewey and Félix Klein, concerned with the teaching of mathematics, in the early twentieth century and, especially after the Second World War. Here in Brazil, EM began to develop in the 1980s, with the Modern Mathematics Movement (MMM), Brazilian researchers who returned from European countries and the United States after their doctoral studies, the creation of groups of studies and research, organization of events, visits by international researchers in this area to our country, the creation of the Brazilian Society of Mathematics Education (SBEM) among other events.
