Sociability, territory and racism: the socially imposed limits on the black’s well-being in a city in the southern region of the country

Abstract

This article aims to explain some of the limits socially imposed on sociability by racism and racial discrimination to blacks living in the city of Londrina-Paraná. Faced with a society structured under the foundations of racial inequality, which thus privileges whites over blacks, we seek to understand how racism interferes in the social relations existing between these two groups, in different spheres and social spaces, privileging itself in this housing items. The text was developed, at first, through empirical research, with in-depth interviews of a qualitative nature, in order to analyze issues related to sociability and identification with the racial issue. It also had a quantitative perspective, through socioeconomic data provided by IBGE. The account of the daily lives of these people shows that, even with significant socioeconomic advances obtained by the black population, especially in the last decades, the view of the black as a subject characterized by racial inferiority is a constant in the most different territories and social spaces.
