This article results from research about the initial training of the kindergarten teacher who will work in the day care center. To what extent do the Pedagogy courses equip the teacher in working with infants and very young children? In order to answer this question, we opted for a qualitative study, structured in two stages: documentary analysis of the menus of the Pedagogy course of two universities in the state of São Paulo (one public and another private) and the application of questionnaires with Students of the last semester. Based on the analysis of the collected data, it was identified that, in the menus of the Pedagogy course, there is more emphasis in elementary education than in the teaching of contents related to the universe of very young children and nursery school. In addition, students from both institutions stated that in the work of the teacher of children's education are present both pedagogical aspects and those related to care.
