This article aims to reflect on the Brazilian Sign Language – Libras (portuguese name) and its insertion in basic education. Thus, the aim is to understand the reality of the deaf community and the emergency need to have a Bilingual Education, focused on the formation of children and adults with deafness, since it is through Libras that the deaf individual can feel truly integrated in society. Bilingual Education enables the development of the subject's abilities, thus facilitating the acquisition of writing and reading in Libras and Portuguese with greater autonomy. Another positive aspect is the way in which society can begin to see the deaf person and user of the Brazilian Sign Language, proposing more knowledge about the importance of this language for all in a school environment. Brazil (2002; 2005; 2006; 2015), Goldfeld (2002), Lima (2015), Gesser (2009) and Quadros (1997; 2004) support the proposed discussions.
